Starknet, the Ethereum scaling network built by StarkWare, has announced that it is actively considering a transition to an independent Layer 1 (L1) network, with a target date of 2027 to become the first fully quantum-resistant network. On Friday, STRK was priced at approximately $0.073, marking a 24-hour increase of about 20%, more than doubling from around $0.03 in April. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson stated that as an L1, Starknet would have full control over its security upgrades without needing to wait for Ethereum to advance related work. Currently, as a Layer 2 (L2) network, Starknet relies on Ethereum for security; transitioning to L1 would allow it to verify and secure transactions independently. Eli Ben-Sasson pointed out that quantum computers could potentially break the elliptic curve cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum in the future, and advancements in AI in the field of mathematics pose another risk. The Ethereum roadmap is expected to complete its core quantum-resistant infrastructure around 2029, while Starknet plans to achieve this by 2027; currently, no quantum computer exists that can break these systems.
