  • QCP: AI Credit Pressure Spreads, Dragging Down Stock Market and Bitcoin, Funds Shift to Long-term US Treasuries

On October 23, QCP stated that credit risks related to AI infrastructure are accelerating in repricing. CoreWeave's bond yield has risen to about 15% this year, and its stock price fell by 10% on October 22, as the market begins to reassess high financing costs and debt sustainability. This pressure has spread from CoreWeave to the broader neocloud infrastructure sector, dragging down the performance of tech stocks and crypto assets, while pushing funds towards long-term US Treasuries. In Europe, the yield on France's 10-year government bonds has surpassed 5%, exceeding 5.1% on October 22, with the spread against German bonds widening to about 170 basis points, reflecting an increase in fiscal and credit risk premiums in the Eurozone. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have pushed Brent and WTI crude oil prices to five-month highs, further increasing inflation and monetary policy uncertainty. QCP noted that the market pricing for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in October is close to zero, but confidence in a rate cut in December has also declined. Bitcoin continues to weaken alongside stocks and other risk assets, showing no independent trend, and currently reflects more of a macro risk appetite.

  • OpenAI Fires 3 Security Researchers Amid Signal Chat and Model Information Leak Investigation

On October 23, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI has fired three security researchers. Internal security personnel discovered that they had engaged in disappearing message chats via Signal with external AI security researchers, raising suspicions that sensitive information related to OpenAI's internal model design was involved. This investigation reportedly began following a September article about OpenAI's latest model, Astra. The article mentioned that Astra employs a new design that enhances model capabilities while reducing the observable reasoning processes for humans. OpenAI viewed the related report as a potential leak of internal model design and initiated a probe into the source of the information. The report also highlighted that this controversy touches on the issue of AI model 'monitorability.' Some security researchers are concerned that if future models can perform tasks without leaving complete traces of their reasoning, it may become more challenging for researchers to determine the reasons behind an AI agent's decisions, as they would only be able to observe the outcomes of its actions. OpenAI investigators have also identified Ryan Greenblatt, who assisted METR in analyzing the logs of the July Hugging Face hacking incident, as one of the suspected leakers, a claim Greenblatt denies.
