On July 16, the South Korean stock market experienced significant volatility over the past nine trading days, leading to a cumulative valuation loss of over 8.8 trillion won for individual stock leveraged ETFs, which have a high proportion of retail investors. According to data released on July 15 by FnGuide Quantwise and Mirae Asset Securities, four individual stock leveraged ETFs issued by Mirae Asset Global Investments and Samsung Asset Management, which track Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, recorded a total valuation loss of 8.8337 trillion won from July 1 to 13. During the same period, the assets under management of these ETFs decreased from 14.3518 trillion won to 8.9389 trillion won, a reduction of 37.7%. All 14 individual stock leveraged ETFs listed in South Korea that track Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also saw a 41.4% decline in assets under management, dropping from 15.9349 trillion won at the end of June to 9.3386 trillion won by July 13, with the Samsung Electronics leveraged ETF decreasing by 35.3% and the SK Hynix leveraged ETF by 44.9%. According to data from the Korea Capital Market Institute, as of June 19, individual investors had cumulatively net purchased 8.2 trillion won in single stock leveraged ETFs, accounting for about 60% of the assets under management of the relevant ETFs, indicating that a significant portion of the recent losses may be borne by individual investors.
