Coinbase Launches International Exchange for Derivatives

Validated Individual Expert

On May 2 Coinbase launched its International Exchange, which “brings the safest, most trusted name in crypto to the global derivatives market,” according to the company’s blog post. The exchange will start by offering BTC & ETH perpetual futures settled in USDC with up to 5x leverage.

Perpetuals are crypto-native derivatives similar to futures but without a settlement date. Regular futures “align” their prices as their approach the settlement date. Perpetual contracts align their price to the underlying asset price by incentivizing or disincentivizing trades.

Unfortunately, Coinbase International currently is not for everyone: it is only available to non-US institutions (but not to retail customers) in select jurisdictions. If you would like to determine your eligibility, you can complete this form. Besides the platform does not offer trading via the user interface, so you have to be comfortable trading with FIX and REST API.

Recently we wrote that Coinbase faces multiple difficulties “grace” to American regulators and step by step starts responding to their actions. At the end of March Coinbase got a Wells notice from SEC warning that the regulator might sue the company, alleging that it had violated securities laws. At the end of April Coinbase publicly responded to the Wells notice and tried to legally force the regulator to respond to a petition for rulemaking that the exchange filed last summer aiming to get proper regulation rules for digital assets.

To avoid such problems this time, Coinbase has gotten a regulatory license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority to launch the International Exchange.

“Rest assured that Coinbase is committed to the US, but countries around the world are increasingly moving forward with responsible crypto-forward regulatory frameworks to strategically position themselves as crypto hubs. We would like to see the US take a similar approach instead of regulation by enforcement which has led to a disappointing trend for crypto development in the US,” — says the company’s blog post, highlighting once again what exactly Coinbase is expecting from the US regulators.

Despite Brian Armstrong’s recent words that Coinbase specifically aims to be working in the US, regulators’ actions (as well as a simple willingness to expand) might have pushed the company to move out of the country — at least partially — and diversify its client base. The Coinbase International Exchange, which is part of the company’s global expansion strategy, is a good way to do so. By the way, Coinbase is currently on an 8-week international expansion drive in 6 continents: South America, Europe, Africa/Middle East, Asia, Australia, and North America, so we expect more announcements soon.

  • Former Japanese Forex Chief: Yen May Be Undervalued by 20%, Shorts Should Beware of Intervention Risks

On July 6, Takao Yamazaki, former chief of Japan's Ministry of Finance and head of foreign exchange policy, stated in an interview that the yen should appreciate by up to 20% from its current level (approximately 130 yen to 1 dollar), refuting views that bet on further weakness of the yen. Yamazaki said, 'This is no longer a fundamental issue, but rather a question of how market expectations change. However, we are approaching a climax.' He believes that the current estimate of the yen being undervalued by 10% may be overly conservative. 'If the yen rises to around 130, I wouldn't be surprised. To be honest, that's my view.' Meanwhile, Yamazaki hinted that the market should not misinterpret the recent apparent calm of Japanese authorities as complacency. He stated, 'They have issued warnings; anyone still holding short positions on the yen knows they face the risk of intervention penalties—namely, being forced to cover their positions. The Ministry of Finance has moved beyond the warning stage, and the authorities have indicated their willingness to take action.'

  • Investment Banks Warn of Increased Selling Pressure on Hong Kong Stocks

On July 6, several new stocks were listed in Hong Kong over the past year, and with the gradual lifting of lock-up periods, an unprecedented wave of unlocks is expected to hit the market. Brokers believe this may add selling pressure to an already struggling Hong Kong stock market. Zhizhu (2513.HK) will have 25.6 million shares ending a six-month lock-up period on Wednesday, accounting for nearly 6% of its total issued shares. The stock price has risen over 12 times since its listing. Xiyu Technology (MiniMax) (0100.HK) and Tianshu Zhixin (9903.HK) will also see lock-up shares released this week, with 45% and 4.3% of their total issued shares unlocked, respectively. Morgan Stanley's report indicates that selling pressure in the secondary market will mainly concentrate in July and September. Even if the company's fundamentals remain robust, these unlock events may pose a liquidity challenge for the market; this is one of the key reasons for the bank's cautious stance on the Hong Kong market in the short term. Goldman Sachs previously estimated that $274 billion (approximately HKD 2.14 trillion) worth of lock-up shares will be released in the Hong Kong market over the next 12 months, marking a historical high. Based on historical experience, related stocks typically see a decline of 4% to 7% in price within 3 to 6 months after the lock-up period ends. The impressive returns from new stocks may further intensify profit-taking pressure. According to EY data, the average first-day gain for Hong Kong IPOs in the first half of this year was 61%, while the overall market performance has been relatively sluggish. The Hang Seng Index has dropped 8.9% year-to-date.

The price forecast for the quarter ending in September has been adjusted from a quarter-on-quarter increase of 16% to 32%, while the forecast for the quarter ending in December has been raised from a 10% increase to 12%. • Tencent Releases Open Source Version of Hy3.0: Apache 2.0 License Reduces Export Restrictions, Halves Hallucination Rate

On July 6, Tencent officially released the 295B parameter version of the Hy3.0 (Hybrid Expert Model) MoE. The most significant change is the switch to the permissive Apache 2.0 open-source license, which removes the previous regional restrictions that prohibited use in the EU, UK, and South Korea. When the preview version was released in April, many overseas or multinational teams were deterred by strict regional limitations and the commercial threshold of 100 million monthly active users. The official version has eliminated all compliance barriers and made substantial optimizations to address deployment challenges: it integrates fast and slow thinking mechanisms and incorporates a 3.8B parameter Multi-Token Prediction (MTP) layer for parallel generation, effectively reducing inference latency. Through fine-grained data cleaning and training constraints, the official version has reduced the hallucination rate of the large model from 12.5% to 5.4%, and the error rate in multi-turn interaction tests has dropped from 17.4% to 7.9%. To address the persistent issue of tool invocation inaccuracies during agent development, Hy3.0 has also undergone targeted enhancements. Whether in mainstream frameworks like Cline or CodeBuddy, the accuracy fluctuations of cross-framework tool calls have been kept under 4%, resulting in more stable outputs. The officially released FP8 quantization version has also lowered the memory requirements for local deployment and fine-tuning.
