On August 20, the Nikkei 225 index surged significantly on Thursday, following measures taken by the US to stabilize the bond market, which boosted investor sentiment and redirected funds towards risk assets. The Japanese stock market saw widespread gains, with 182 of the Nikkei 225 constituent stocks rising, 42 falling, and 1 remaining unchanged. The largest gainer among the index constituents was Sumitomo Metal Mining, which rose by 10.76%, followed by Sumitomo Pharma with an increase of 8.48%; Kansai Electric Power also rose by 8.37%, marking its largest single-day gain since August 2024. Nomura Securities equity strategist Wataru Akiyama stated that the decline in yields was undoubtedly a key factor driving the market's rise today. Notably, stocks and sectors that had previously lagged behind the gains of AI and semiconductor-related stocks also experienced significant increases.
