Sources: Trump to narrow Treasury secretary picks this week

According to sources, Trump plans to narrow down the list of candidates for US Treasury Secretary this week and is inclined to appoint someone with a Wall Street background to the position. The list of candidates for Treasury Secretary includes Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson, former George Soros Fund manager Scott Bessent, and Glenn Youngkin, former executive at Carlyle Group and current Governor of Virginia. Sources say that Bessent met with Trump at the Lake House on Friday, but it was not an interview for the Treasury Secretary position. Insiders say that Trump's Wall Street allies are urging him to appoint someone with a deep understanding of the financial industry as Treasury Secretary, and the Trump team has indicated that they will follow this recommendation. Robert Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative and designer of the comprehensive tariff proposal in Trump's first term, is also one of the candidates for Treasury Secretary. Insiders say that Lighthizer has already begun to develop tariff plans involving China and the EU, and he may eventually hold a broad position in the White House overseeing the government's trade policy.

  • Economists expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in December, with two more cuts possible in 2026.

according to economists surveyed, Federal Reserve officials are expected to vote next week to cut interest rates again to guard against the rising risk of a sharp deterioration in the labor market. The median of respondents shows that the Fed is expected to implement two more 25 basis point rate cuts within the year starting from March 2026. Next week's rate cut will continue the momentum of rate cuts from the policy meetings in September and October. A considerable majority also expect Fed officials to once again reiterate the statement that "the downside risks to employment have increased in recent months," as they did in October. The Federal Reserve will announce its decision at 2 PM Washington time on December 10, followed by a press conference held by Chairman Jerome Powell.
