On August 14, South Korean media reported that SK Hynix significantly increased its equipment and R&D investments in the first half of this year to meet the growing demand for AI storage. Cash expenditures for acquiring tangible assets exceeded 18 trillion won, marking an increase of over 70% compared to the same period last year. According to SK Hynix's semi-annual report disclosed on the 14th, the cash expenditure for acquiring tangible assets was 18.3288 trillion won in the first half of this year, up 72.7% from 10.6157 trillion won in the same period last year. R&D spending also saw a substantial increase, totaling 6.0428 trillion won in the first half of this year, a 98.4% rise from 3.0456 trillion won last year. Of this, 5.8163 trillion won was allocated for ongoing development costs. With the increasing demand for AI-specific high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM, and enterprise-grade solid-state drives (SSD), SK Hynix is accelerating the expansion of its production facilities.
