The proposal is one of several options being considered by Trump and Netanyahu, aimed at further increasing economic pressure on Iran. The plan could require the US and Israel to pressure Iran's neighboring countries and regional partners to tighten or even close border crossings, restricting Iran's import and export trade flows. Retired three-star Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland said that although a land blockade is "almost impossible to achieve," "if you deprive Iran of the ability to trade... then you are economically isolating it. That is the way to make them capitulate. Economic means are the most straightforward approach, but they must include a military action component." Iran borders Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, which means US and Israeli leaders would have to persuade these countries to cooperate, many of which are not their allies. A land blockade on Iran could target key border crossings, such as Incheh Borun and Sarakhs-Sarakhs, which connect Iran and Turkmenistan.
