On July 7, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport ship was struck by a projectile near the coast of Oman while exiting the Strait of Hormuz. This incident has heightened concerns within the shipping industry regarding the safety of this crucial waterway and is also testing the agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at preventing such attacks. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Al Rekayyat was attacked early Tuesday morning. Due to the sensitivity of the incident, the sources requested anonymity. An alert issued by the security consulting firm EOS Risk Group confirmed that the attack occurred approximately 8 nautical miles (15 kilometers) east of Limah, Oman, resulting in a fire on board and characterizing the incident as a drone or missile strike. Vessel tracking data indicates that the ship, owned by Qatar's state shipping company Nakilat, appeared to have its transponder turned off at the time of the incident. The UK Maritime Trade Operations had previously issued an alert but did not disclose the name of the involved vessel. Neither Qatar Energy nor Nakilat responded to requests for comment.
