  • Goldman Sachs: Fed Meeting May See Biggest Policy Surprise in Nearly 30 Years

On July 29, "Fed whisperer" Nick Timiraos said that Goldman Sachs noted that since the interest rate futures market currently prices in a one-third probability of a rate hike by the Fed today, whatever the Fed ultimately decides will be the biggest "surprise" at a non-rate-cut meeting since 1997. If the Fed raises rates, it would be "the biggest meeting-day surprise, excluding rate cuts, since the Fed began issuing statements announcing policy rate changes."

  • HSBC: Dollar May Fall if Fed Holds Rates Steady

On July 29, HSBC analyst Daragh Maher noted in a report that with the market having already priced in some rate hike expectations, the dollar could weaken if the Federal Reserve announces it will hold rates steady. He said that to curb the initial decline of the dollar, at least three Fed members would need to vote for a rate hike. He pointed out that if the Fed does raise rates, the initial gains are likely to far exceed the potential initial decline if rates are held steady. Maher stated: "A faster-than-expected rate hike would force the market to consider whether this is the first in a series of rate increases." In contrast, he believes that holding steady should not have a major impact on expectations for a rate hike in September. (Jin10)

  • JPMorgan Analyzes Fed Decision: Holding Rates Steady with Dovish Signals Most Favorable for Stocks

On July 29, JPMorgan's market intelligence team stated that the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates unchanged while sending dovish signals would be the "best outcome" for the stock market. The team's scenario analysis shows a 28% probability of the Fed holding rates steady and releasing accommodative signals on the inflation outlook. In this case, the S&P 500 could rise 0.5% to 1%. The team led by Andrew Tyler wrote in a report that the worst outcome would be a 50-basis-point rate hike by the Fed, but the probability of this scenario is only 1%. In this case, the S&P 500 could fall 2% to 4%. The team's base-case scenario, with a 50% probability, is that the Fed maintains a hawkish stance and keeps rates unchanged. Under this scenario, the Fed warns that vigilance against inflation is still needed. Swap traders expect a 25-basis-point rate hike at the Fed's decision later on Wednesday to have a 30% probability. JPMorgan's team noted that even if the Fed cuts rates, stocks could fall if the market perceives it as losing independence.
