On August 7, Reuters reported, citing sources, that Alibaba plans to charge a certain percentage of revenue from large users who utilize its next version of the Qwen open-source AI model. The specific percentage is still unclear as discussions are ongoing. So far, Alibaba has charged developers for using the model hosted on its own cloud computing platform, but has allowed customers to use most of its open-source products for free in their own data centers. Similar to the sensational model released by Moon's Dark Side last month, Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max model is also an open-source model with open weights, meaning developers can download the foundational learning parameters that support system operation or adjustments. In contrast, American developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google's parent company Alphabet use closed-source models.
