introduction:

In 2025, AI agents are moving from theory to practice and becoming the focus of the technology field. Anthropic's Claude 3.7 shines in coding tasks, and the open source community implements complex functions through browser operations. AI's capabilities are shifting from dialogue to execution. However, a key problem has always plagued developers and users: How to make these agents interact with the real world efficiently and safely? In November 2024, Anthropic launched MCP (Model Context Protocol) , an open source standardized protocol known as the "USB-C for AI". It promises to connect large language models (LLMs) with external tools and data sources through a unified interface, completely revolutionizing the development and application model of Agents, and it has been supported by 2000+ Servers within 4 months of its launch.

For ordinary people, MCP is more like an "AI magic key", allowing non-technical users to easily command smart assistants to complete daily chores. Imagine that you say "organize my schedule and remind me of tomorrow's meeting", and MCP will do it in seconds; or "design a birthday card and send it to a friend", it will be generated and delivered instantly. MCP turns AI from "advanced technology" into a caring helper in personal life, saving time, inspiring creativity, and protecting privacy - all without you having to know a line of code. Whether it's a busy office worker who wants to plan his schedule or a student who wants to organize notes, MCP makes the future within reach.

Is MCP a short-term technology craze or the cornerstone of the future ecosystem? This article will comprehensively analyze the full picture of MCP from the dimensions of technical architecture, core advantages, application scenarios, ecological status, potential and challenges, and future trends, and provide a detailed guide for technology enthusiasts, developers, corporate decision makers, and individual users. Let us explore together how this "key" can unlock the infinite possibilities of AI.

1. What is MCP?

1.1 Definition and Origin

MCP, the full name of "Model Context Protocol", is a standardized protocol launched by Anthropic in November 2024. It was originally an extension of the Claude ecosystem and aims to solve the fragmentation problem of AI models interacting with external tools and data. It is known as the "USB-C of AI" or "universal plug". By providing a unified interface, AI agents can seamlessly access external resources such as databases, file systems, web pages, APIs, etc. without having to develop complex adaptation code for each tool separately.

If API is the unified language of the Internet, connecting servers and clients, then MCP is the unified language of AI tools, connecting intelligent agents and the real world. It allows AI to operate tools through natural language, just like humans use smartphones naturally - from "tell me today's weather" to "check the weather and remind me to bring an umbrella", and then to "generate 3D models and upload them to the cloud."

Core Vision : The goal of MCP is not only to improve efficiency, but also to empower AI agents with the ability to move from "understanding" to "doing" through standardization, allowing developers, enterprises and even non-technical users to customize agents and become a bridge between virtual intelligence and the physical world.

The birth of MCP is not accidental. Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI members, is well aware of the limitations of LLMs - they are trapped in "information islands", their knowledge is limited to training data, and they cannot obtain external information in real time. In 2024, with the success of the Claude series of models, Anthropic realized that a universal protocol was needed to unlock the potential of AI. The open source release of MCP quickly caused a sensation. By March 2025, more than 2,000 community-developed MCP Servers had been launched, covering scenarios from file management to blockchain analysis, with more than 300 GitHub projects participating, a growth rate of up to 1,200%. It is not only a technical protocol, but also a community-driven collaborative framework.

1.2 What is MCP for individual users?

For individual users, MCP is the "magic key to AI", making complex intelligent tools within reach. It allows ordinary people to command AI to complete daily tasks through natural language without programming knowledge, completely breaking down technical barriers. Imagine that you say to Claude: "Organize my schedule and remind me of tomorrow's meeting", MCP will automatically connect calendars, emails and reminder tools to complete the task in seconds; or, you say: "Help me design a birthday card", MCP calls the design server (such as Figma), generates a personalized card and saves it to the cloud. For ordinary users who don't understand code, MCP is like an invisible super assistant, turning tedious operations into simple conversations, allowing technology to truly serve life.

• Simply put : MCP is like an intelligent butler, upgrading your AI assistant from "only able to chat" to "able to do things", helping you manage files, plan your life, and even create content.

• Practical value : It transforms AI from an unattainable technology into a helper in personal life, saving time, improving efficiency, and protecting privacy (authority control reaches 98% reliability).

The broader picture: from trivia to creativity

MCP is not only a tool, but also a lifestyle change. It allows everyone to "customize" their own AI assistant without relying on expensive professional services. Even for the elderly, MCP can simplify operations - just say "remind me to take medicine and notify my family", and AI will automatically complete it, enhancing independence. MCP goes beyond simple tasks and can also inspire your creativity to solve life needs:

• Daily management : Say "make a shopping list for this week and remind me", and MCP will check the refrigerator inventory and price comparison websites, generate a list in seconds and send a text message, saving half an hour.

• Learning and growth : Students said, "Organize biology notes and make review plans." MCP scans notes, connects to the learning platform, and outputs review sheets and test questions, increasing efficiency by 40%.

• Interest exploration : Want to learn how to cook? Just say "find pasta recipes and ingredients" and MCP will search websites, check inventory, and generate a menu, saving you the trouble of flipping through books.

• Emotional connection : On her birthday, she asked me to “design a card for my mom.” MCP designed it using Figma and sent it via email in 10 minutes.

Privacy and controllability: user peace of mind

Privacy is one of the most important issues for individual users. MCP's permission control mechanism allows users to fully control the flow of data. For example, you can set "only allow AI to read calendars, not touch photos", and the permission reliability is as high as 98%, far exceeding the vague authorization of traditional cloud services. Furthermore, MCP's "sampling" function allows users to review requests before AI performs sensitive tasks. For example, when analyzing bank statements, users can confirm "only data from the last month" to avoid privacy leaks. This transparency and control allow MCP to gain trust while being convenient.

1.3 Why do we need MCP?

The limitations of LLM gave rise to MCP. Traditionally, the knowledge of AI models is limited to training data and cannot access real-time information. For example, if an LLM wants to analyze cryptocurrency market trends in March 2025, it needs to manually enter data or write dedicated API calls, which takes hours or even days. What's more serious is that when multiple models and tools are involved, developers face the "M×N problem" - assuming there are 10 AI models and 10 external tools, 100 custom integrations need to be written, and the complexity increases exponentially. This fragmentation is not only inefficient, but also difficult to scale.

MCP was created to break down these barriers. It simplifies the number of connections from N×M to N+M (10 models and 10 tools only require 20 configurations), and allows AI agents to call tools as flexibly as humans through standardized interfaces. For example, to query real-time stock prices and generate reports, traditional methods take 2 hours, while MCP only takes 2 minutes. It is not only a technical solution, but also a revolutionary response to the fragmentation of the AI ecosystem.

The following table compares the differences between MCP and traditional interaction methods:

2. Technical Architecture and Internal Operation Principles of MCP

2.1 Technical Background and Ecological Positioning

The technical basis of MCP is JSON-RPC 2.0, which is a lightweight and efficient communication standard that supports real-time two-way interaction and high performance similar to WebSockets. It runs through a client-server architecture:

• MCP Host : The application with which the user interacts, such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf, is responsible for receiving requests and displaying results.

• MCP Client : Embedded in the host, establishes a one-to-one connection with the server, handles protocol communications, and ensures isolation and security.

• MCP Server : A lightweight program that provides specific functions and connects to local (such as desktop files) or remote (such as cloud API) data sources.

The transmission methods include:

• Stdio : Standard input and output, suitable for local rapid deployment, such as file management, with latency as low as milliseconds.

• HTTP SSE : Server push events, supports remote real-time interactions, such as cloud API calls, and is suitable for distributed scenarios.

Anthropic plans to introduce WebSockets by the end of 2025 to further improve remote performance. In the AI ecosystem, MCP has a unique position. It is not like OpenAI's Function Calling, which is bound to a specific platform, nor is it like LangChain's tool library, which is only for developers. Instead, it serves developers, enterprises, and non-technical users through openness and standardization. As of March 2025, MCP has been integrated into clients such as Claude, Continue, Sourcegraph, Windsurf, and LibreChat, and the ecosystem has begun to take shape.

2.2 Architecture Design

MCP uses a client-server architecture, which can be compared to a restaurant scenario: customers (MCP hosts) want to order food (data or operations), and the waiter (MCP client) communicates with the restaurant (MCP server). To ensure efficiency and security, MCP assigns a dedicated client to each server to form a one-to-one isolated connection. Its core components include:

• Host : User portal, such as Claude Desktop, responsible for initiating requests and displaying results, and is the "facade" of interaction.

• Client : Communication intermediary, interacting with the server using JSON-RPC 2.0, managing requests and responses, and ensuring isolation.

• Server : A provider of functionality that connects to external resources and performs tasks, such as reading a file or calling an API.

Flexible transmission methods:

• Stdio : Local deployment, suitable for fast access to desktop files or local databases, with latency as low as milliseconds, such as counting the number of txt files.

• HTTP SSE : Remote interaction, supports cloud API calls, strong real-time performance, such as querying weather API, suitable for distributed scenarios.

• Future extensions : WebSockets or streaming HTTP, possibly by the end of 2025, will further improve remote performance and reduce latency by 20%.

2.3 Functional Primitives

MCP implements its functions through three kinds of "primitives":

1. Tools : executable functions that AI calls to complete specific tasks. For example, the “Exchange Rate Conversion” tool converts 100 RMB to 14 USD and 109 HKD in real time (based on a fixed exchange rate example in March 2025); the “Search” tool can query today’s movie showtimes.

2. Resources : Structured data, used as contextual input. For example, reading the README file of a GitHub repository to provide project background, or scanning a local 10MB PDF file to extract key information.

3. Prompts : Predefined instruction templates that guide the AI to use tools and resources. For example, the "Summarize Document" prompt generates a 200-word summary, and the "Plan Trip" prompt integrates calendar and flight data.

In addition, MCP supports the "sampling" function, where the server can request LLM to process tasks, and the user can review the request and results to ensure security and transparency. For example, the server requests "analyze file content", and after the user approves it, AI returns a summary to ensure that sensitive data is not abused, improving security and transparency.

2.4 Communication Process

The operating mechanism of MCP includes four stages:

Take "Query Desktop Files" as an example:

1. User enters "list my documents".

2. Claude analyzes the request and identifies the file server that needs to be called.

3. The client connects to the Server and the user approves the permissions.

4. The server returns a list of files and Claude generates a response.

Another example is “Planning a Trip”: the user inputs “arrange a trip on Saturday”, Claude finds the calendar and flight server, obtains the schedule and ticketing data, and returns “fly to Paris at 10:00 on Saturday” after prompting integration.

3. Why should we pay attention to MCP?

3.1 Pain points of the current AI ecosystem

The limitations of LLM are obvious:

• Information islands : Knowledge is limited to training data and cannot be updated in real time. For example, if an LLM wants to analyze Bitcoin transactions in March 2025, it needs to manually input data externally.

• M×N problem : Integration between multiple models and tools is exponentially complex. For example, 10 models and 10 tools require 100 custom codes and take weeks.

• Inefficiency : Traditional methods require embedding vectors or vector searches, which are computationally expensive and have long response delays.

These problems limit the potential of AI agents, making it difficult for them to move from "dreaming" to "doing".

3.2 Breakthrough Advantages of MCP

MCP brings seven advantages through standardized interfaces:

1. Real-time access : AI can query the latest data in seconds. For example, Claude Desktop obtains a file list in 0.5 seconds through MCP, which is 10 times more efficient.

2. Security and control : Direct access to data without intermediate storage, with 98% reliability of permission management (Claude test). For example, users can restrict AI to read only specific files.

3. Low computational load : No need to embed vectors, reducing computational costs by about 70% (community test). For example, traditional vector search requires 1GB of memory, while MCP only requires 100MB.

4. Flexibility and scalability : The number of connections is reduced from 100 million (N×M) to 20,000 (N+M). For example, 10 models and 10 tools only require 20 configurations.

5. Interoperability : An MCP Server can be reused by multiple models such as Claude and GPT. For example, a weather server serves users all over the world.

6. Vendor flexibility : Switching LLMs does not require restructuring infrastructure, just like USB-C is compatible with different brands of headphones.

7. Autonomous agent support : AI can dynamically access tools to perform complex tasks. For example, when planning a trip, AI can query the calendar, book flights, and send emails at the same time, increasing efficiency by 50%.

3.3 Importance and Impact

MCP is not only a technological breakthrough, but also a catalyst for ecological change. It is like the Rosetta Stone, unlocking the communication between AI and the outside world; it is also like the standardization of containers, which has changed the efficiency of global trade. For example, a pharmaceutical company integrated 10 data sources through MCP, reducing the R&D query time from 2 hours to 10 minutes, and improving decision-making efficiency by 90%. It also encourages developers to build common tools, so that one server can serve the world and promote the formation of an ecosystem similar to npm. However, its popularization needs to be vigilant against ecological fragmentation and security vulnerabilities, which will be discussed later.

IV. Application scenarios and practical cases of MCP

4.1 Diversified Application Scenarios

MCP has a wide range of applications, like a super librarian, extracting the required information from the vast knowledge:

1. Development and Productivity :

○ Code debugging : Cursor AI debugged 100,000 lines of code through Browsetools Server, reducing the error rate by 25%.

○ Document Search : Mintlify Server searches 1,000 pages of documents in 2 seconds, saving 80% of the time.

○ Task automation : Google Sheets Server automatically updates 500 sales sheets, increasing efficiency by 300%.

2. Creativity and Design :

○ Bitcoin interaction : MCP Server queries blockchain transactions, and the real-time performance is improved to seconds.

○ DeFi Analysis : Analyzing Binance’s large-cap transactions, the predicted profit is $7.88 million with an accuracy rate of 85%.

4.2 In-depth analysis of specific cases

• Case analysis : Taking "file management" as an example, Claude scanned 1,000 files through MCP Server and generated a 500-word summary in just 0.5 seconds. The traditional method requires manually uploading files to the cloud, which takes several minutes. MCP's resource primitives provide file content, prompt primitives guide summarization, and tool primitives execute operations, achieving perfect collaboration.

• Blockchain Applications : In March 2025, AI analyzed Binance’s large-scale transactions through MCP Server and predicted potential profits of $7.88 million with an accuracy rate of 85%, demonstrating its potential in the financial field.

5. MCP Ecosystem: Current Status and Participants

5.1 Ecosystem Architecture

The MCP ecosystem has taken shape, covering four major roles:

1. Client :

○ Mainstream applications : Claude Desktop, Cursor, Continue.

4. Infrastructure :

○ Cloudflare : Hosts 20% of servers, ensuring 99.9% availability.

○ Toolbase : Manage connections and optimize latency by 20%.

○ Smithery : Provides dynamic load balancing.

5.2 Ecological Data

• Scale : As of March 2025, the number of MCP Servers will increase from 154 in December 2024 to more than 2,000, a growth rate of 1,200%.

• Community : 300+ GitHub project participation, 60% of Server comes from developer contributions.

• Activity : In early 2025, the Hackathon attracted 100+ developers and produced 20+ innovative applications, such as shopping assistants and health monitoring tools.

VI. Limitations and Challenges of MCP

6.1 Technical bottlenecks

• Implementation complexity : MCP contains hints and sampling functions, which increases the difficulty of development. For example, the tool description needs to be carefully written, otherwise the LLM call is prone to errors.

• Deployment limitations : Depends on local terminal operation, requires manual server startup, does not support one-click deployment or Web applications, and limits remote scenarios.

• Debugging challenges : Poor cross-client compatibility and insufficient logging support. For example, a server may work fine on Claude Desktop but fail on Cursor.

• Transmission shortcomings : only supports Stdio and SSE, lacks more flexible options such as WebSockets, and has limited remote real-time performance.

6.2 Shortcomings in ecological quality

• Uneven quality : About 30% of the 2000+ servers have stability issues or missing documentation, resulting in uneven user experience.

• Insufficient discoverability : The server address needs to be manually configured, the dynamic discovery mechanism is not mature, and users need to search and test by themselves.

• Scale limitations : Compared to Zapier's 5000+ tools or LangChain's 500+ tool library, MCP's coverage is still insufficient.

6.3 Applicability Challenges in Production Environments

• Calling accuracy : The current LLM tool calling success rate is about 50%, and it is easy to fail in complex tasks, for example, calling the wrong tool or mismatching parameters.

• Customization requirements : The production agent needs to optimize system messages and architecture according to the tool, which is difficult to meet with the "plug and play" of MCP. For example, a financial analysis agent needs to deeply integrate a specific data source.

• User expectations : As model capabilities increase, users have higher requirements for reliability and speed, and the versatility of MCP may sacrifice performance.

6.4 Competition and pressure from alternatives

• Proprietary solution : OpenAI's Agent SDK provides higher reliability through deep optimization and may attract high-end users.

• Existing framework : LangChain’s tool library has established stickiness among developers, and MCP’s new ecosystem needs time to catch up.

• Market comparison : OpenAI’s Custom GPTs have not been widely successful, and MCP needs to prove its unique value to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

6.5 Analysis of Shortcomings in Data Support

7. Future Trends: Evolution Path of MCP

7.1 Multidimensional Paths of Technology Optimization

• Protocol simplification : remove redundant functions (such as LLM completion in sampling), focus on tool calls, and lower the development threshold.

• Stateless design : supports server-side deployment, introduces authentication mechanisms such as OAuth, and solves multi-tenant issues.

• Standardized user experience : Unified tool selection logic and interface design, such as through “@command” calls, to improve consistency.

• Debug upgrade : Develop cross-platform debugging tools to provide detailed logs and error tracking.

• Transport extensions : support for WebSockets and streamable HTTP to improve remote interaction capabilities.

7.2 Strategic direction of ecological development

• Marketplace construction : Launch a platform similar to npm, integrating rating, search and one-click installation functions to optimize server discovery.

• Web support : Cloud deployment and browser integration are achieved to get rid of local restrictions and aim to cover 80% of Web users.

• Business scenario expansion : from coding tools to customer support, design, marketing and other fields. For example, developing a CRM Server or designing a material server.

• Community incentives : Encourage high-quality server development through bonuses, certifications, etc., with the goal of reaching 5,000+ servers by the end of 2025.

7.3 In-depth prediction of industry impact

7.4 Key variables and time nodes

• Model capability : If the tool call success rate is increased to more than 80%, the practicality of MCP will be greatly enhanced.

• Community activity : The number and quality of servers are the core of ecological success and need to exceed 5,000.

• Technological breakthroughs : Solving authentication and gateway issues by the end of 2025 will determine how quickly MCP can be adopted.

8. Conclusion

MCP is an attempt to standardize the interaction between AI agents and tools. Its advantages lie in efficiency, flexibility, and ecological potential. Currently, it performs well in development assistance and personalization scenarios, but the immaturity of technology and ecology limits production-level applications. In the future, if simplified design and wide support are achieved, MCP is expected to become the cornerstone of the Agent ecosystem, similar to HTTP on the Internet. 2025 will be a watershed in its development and deserves continued attention.

  • Analyst: The Federal Reserve Needs to Tighten Monetary Policy

According to analyst Bill Dudley, regardless of fluctuations in high-frequency data, there are still compelling reasons for the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy. First, given the current economic conditions and the asymmetry between the Fed's dual goals of achieving full employment and price stability, a tightening monetary policy is appropriate. On one hand, the unemployment rate has remained stable and is very close to the level that members of the Federal Open Market Committee consider to be full employment; on the other hand, inflation remains high, with various core inflation indicators generally between 2.4% and 3.3%. In this context, monetary policy should adopt a tightening approach. Second, there is almost no evidence that the current monetary policy is tight. The federal funds rate has been maintained at its current level or higher for nearly four years, and the unemployment rate has been quite stable, remaining at full employment levels for the past two years. If the policy were truly tight, we would theoretically expect to see an increase in the unemployment rate and a decrease in inflation. The current strong conditions in the financial markets also support this judgment. Third, the surge in AI investments supports further tightening of monetary policy. The spike in AI spending is driving real GDP growth and pushing up prices in several areas, such as electricity costs and semiconductor chip prices. Although AI is expected to enhance productivity and help reduce inflation in the long term, its current dominant role is still to stimulate demand and push up prices. Fourth, the credibility of the Federal Reserve is at risk. The inflation rate has exceeded the Fed's 2% target for more than five consecutive years. If the Fed hesitates, market participants may perceive Waller's tough rhetoric as mere 'bluster.' The Fed should not tighten monetary policy solely to enhance its anti-inflation credibility. However, the reality is that the risks faced by the Fed are asymmetric: if monetary policy is not sufficiently restrictive in the coming years and fails to bring inflation back to 2%, the costs will be greater than those of a slightly tight policy that later proves to be overly restrictive. Waller has consistently pledged to achieve price stability and maintain the independence of the Fed, but actions speak louder than words. Establishing working groups and proposing new ideas are commendable, but monetary policy cannot be outsourced to external experts or market participants. The Fed needs to intensify its efforts to tighten monetary policy. Bill Dudley expects that the Fed will maintain its current monetary policy at next week's meeting, but by autumn, the pressure to tighten monetary policy will become very significant.
