The U.S. Department of Justice has accused the operator of the crypto exchange AurumXchange of suspected money laundering, with some of the funds coming from the dark web market "Silk Road"

on October 28, 2024, the US Department of Justice charged Maximiliano Pilipis, the operator of the cryptocurrency exchange AurumXchange, with money laundering. It is reported that the exchange processed more than 100,000 transactions during its operation, with a total amount exceeding 30 million US dollars, and some of the funds came from the dark web market "Silk Road".

Investigations have shown that Pilipis operated the exchange without a license from 2009 to 2013, during which he charged about 12,000 bitcoins (valued at about 1.2 million US dollars at the time) as transaction fees. The Department of Justice stated that he was not registered with the US Treasury Department and did not comply with KYC regulations, violating anti-money laundering (AML) and anti-terrorism financing (CTF) regulations.

In addition, Pilipis was also accused of using the obtained bitcoins and other assets for money laundering after the exchange was closed, and converting the cryptocurrency into US dollars to invest in real estate in Indiana. He was also charged with undeclared income for 2019 and 2020. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 250,000 US dollars.

  • Hyperliquid Co-Founder: On-Chain Financial Differentiation Lies in Self-Custody and Transparency, Not 24/7 Trading

On September 30, according to The Block, Hyperliquid co-founder Jeff Yan stated during the Korea Blockchain Week that 24/7 trading is not the key differentiator of on-chain venues compared to traditional exchanges. He believes the lasting advantages of on-chain systems lie in self-custody and transparency: users retain control over their own funds, which is particularly crucial when issues arise with counterparties, intermediaries, or custodians. Transparency allows users to theoretically understand everything about the system, a level of trust and neutrality that centralized institutions struggle to provide. He also mentioned that continuous trading still holds value for assets (such as commodities, stocks, and pre-IPO targets) that lack public pricing during traditional exchange closures; he believes the private equity market presents the next significant opportunity for 24/7 trading.
