Amazon Cancels Release of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's Biopic 'Artificial' and Seeks to Resell to Other Distributors

On June 19, Amazon has withdrawn the film 'Artificial', which tells the story of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's brief ousting in 2023, from its release schedule and has begun seeking to resell it to other film companies. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Yura Borisov as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, with the plot being likened to an AI version of 'The Social Network'. Reports indicate that the early script portrayed Altman negatively, depicting him as power-hungry and manipulative, with one scene even quoting computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton's assessment that Altman is 'one of the most manipulative people on Earth'. It has been reported that as the film's final version took on a darker tone than initially conceived, Mike Hopkins, the executive in charge of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, decided to cancel the release after viewing a screening. This decision comes months after Amazon invested $50 billion in OpenAI. Insiders suggest that as Altman's relationship with the Trump administration has grown closer, and given that Amazon and its founder Jeff Bezos also wish to maintain related ties, the film's political and commercial sensitivity has increased. Currently, the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) is seeking a new distributor for 'Artificial'.
