The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has announced an investigation into OpenAI, the company behind the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT. The probe was initiated on April 4, 2023, in response to a complaint alleging the unauthorized collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.
“AI technology and its effects on privacy is a priority for my Office,” Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne says. “We need to keep up with – and stay ahead of – fast-moving technological advances, and that is one of my key focus areas as Commissioner.”
Canada's privacy commissioner is not alone in expressing concerns over ChatGPT. Several other countries, including Germany and France, have also raised issues regarding the chatbot's privacy practices. Italy recently banned ChatGPT altogether, following a bug that exposed users' payment information and chat history.
