An update to the Arweave protocol, version 2.7 has been released and due to be launched October 5 at block height 1,275,480, the Digital History Association, which performs research on the Arweave protocol and recommends improvement has announced.

Merkle tree rebasing, improvement to node memory usage and a minor improvement to the protocol are some of the updates to Arweave 2.7. Arweave considers the protocol as complete, useful and scalable although it is still on the look out for ways to polish it.

The biggest update is the Merkle tree rebasing which the Digital History Association said will enable more efficient bundling formats. It also makes easier, quicker and less CPU-intesive when combining multiple data transactions. Also called hash tree, Merkle tree is used to verify that two or more parties have the same data without exchanging the entire data collection.

“This allows for greater censorship resistance as bundling services can now be run on machines with extremely minimal hardware requirements,” the DHA stated.

Data root merkle tree rebasing will allow the creation of bundling surfaces that do not have to see the data that they are bundling. Sam Williams said during Arweave Asia day in Singapore, that creating bundling surfaces  is useful because it is performant  which means that instead of uploading data of different people to bundlers before uploading to the network, the merkle root of different data can be sent directly to the network. This also helps with censorship, he said.

"This will let users upload via bundling services without first revealing the data that they are posting. Users will then be able to seed the data directly to miners who are interested in storing it after consensus is reached on its inclusion. This reinforces the second Arweave principle," Williams stated about reports of the Arweave 2.7 being released.

The second principle of Arweave is ensuring the right to speech in cyberspace.

Early this year, Arweave released version 2.6 which makes mining more energy efficient and incentivises miners to store more data.
