Ar.io, a network platform of Arweave gateways, has built WayFinder, a proof-of-concept web browser extension which it says uses algorithms to select gateways to route users to and aid the platform’s protocol operation by leveraging the Gateway Address Registry.

Currently in alpha version and available as a Chrome and Brave extension, WayFinder works by using the ar:// protocol which is a unique web address schema by ar.io network. It can be used to navigate and interact with decentralised web page applications through ArNS Name or Arweave transaction ID.

The WayFinder does instantaneous health checks on gateways to ensure that the best gateways are being explored. The WayFinder determines the health of gateways by checking whether they are online or offline.

Two categories of people can use the WayFinder: anyone looking to explore the permaweb and developers looking to integrate the ar:// protocol to find gateways on the ar.io network. Users are not required to have wallets before using the extension.

Ar.io said the WayFinder is the proof of what can be built using the GAR and stated further how some projects have been built with the Gateway Address Registry. While View Block uses the GAR on their gateway explorer page, applications like ArDrive integrate gateway selectors based on specific criteria and enhance user experience and performance.

The WayFinder removes the barriers to accessing the Arweave network through extension innovation for web2 browsers. Making wallets unnecessary in using the WayFinder could encourage adoption by users who are new to how permaweb works.

Ar.io has had more than 100 nodes join the GAR which was launched in early September to serve as the authoritative catalog of all gateway operators participating in the ar.io network.
