A survey conducted by cybersecurity startup Straiker reveals that a hacker organization known as CyberCartel has built a network of AI agents powered by large models from multiple vendors, including Anthropic and SpaceX. This system has been used to launch automated cyber attacks targeting over 400 financial institutions in Latin America. This research report is one of the first to document how cybercriminals successfully implement automated attacks using AI models to infiltrate financial institutions. Straiker's research indicates that the CyberCartel, which has long targeted Latin American businesses, has focused its attacks on several banks and payment applications; the AI agents employed by the organization can autonomously steal passwords and customer data, access user bank accounts, and operate with minimal human intervention.
