On October 12, the Sui Foundation announced a $30 million investment in DATA Network as part of a strategic partnership. The AI training data protocol will be integrated into the Sui technology stack and combined with the on-chain data storage platform Walrus. As part of the arrangement, the Sui Foundation will become the largest institutional holder of DATA Network, alongside existing stakeholders PIP Labs and DATA Foundation. DATA Network will upgrade to a protocol that operates natively on Sui, and its independent chain will be retired, with existing DATA tokens migrating to Sui on a 1:1 basis. The original network will continue to operate until the transition is complete, and the foundation will release a detailed timeline before the upgrade. Walrus will serve as the default storage layer for applications operated by the DATA Foundation. In June of this year, the DATA Foundation shifted from general intellectual property infrastructure to AI training data, launching Trace to track the sources and usage rights of AI training data and settle payments to data contributors. Since its launch, the Trace registry has recorded over 250 million contributions, processing more than 3 million receipts daily.
