Microsoft Copilot Begins Reading Emails and Teams Chats for Personalization, Users Can Opt-Out

On October 27, Forbes reported that Microsoft is rolling out a Copilot personalization update for eligible Microsoft 365 business and education accounts. This update utilizes information from Outlook emails, Teams chat records, and meeting transcriptions to infer user preferences, relationships, and work priorities. Microsoft stated that the related data is confidential and will not be used to train its models. Users can disable 'Chat History and Work Insights' in the 'Settings - Chat Settings - Personalization' section of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Once disabled, inferred memories will be deleted after 30 days; if re-enabled during this period, the related memories may be restored.
