Receiving the most generous $200,000 donation in OP's history: Can Clearpool, with a TVL of only $8 million, handle it?

Clearpool, as a relatively lesser-known DeFi project, has a total locked value (TVL) of only $8 million. Therefore, this donation has raised some concerns within the OP community. Many people are questioning why such a substantial donation is being made to a protocol with limited visibility.
With this series of questions in mind, this article takes you on a journey to explore the mysteries of the cryptocurrency uncollateralized lending space and the Clearpool project itself.
First, let's get an understanding of the unsecured lending in the crypto assets space, as this forms the foundation for us to comprehend relevant projects.
The ability for asset lending is the cornerstone of any financial system, where lenders can earn returns by putting idle cash into the lending market, while borrowers can quickly access the working capital they need. In traditional financial systems, this process is facilitated, but in the realm of cryptocurrencies, the situation is slightly different. Currently, lending in the cryptocurrency space is primarily dominated by overcollateralized lending, meaning borrowers must provide cryptocurrency assets worth more than the value of their loans as collateral. This model leads to relatively low capital efficiency issues.
Unsecured lending also exists in DeFi, but the overall market size remains small. Maple, Clearpool, and TrueFi are three DeFi protocols with total value locked (TVL) exceeding one million US dollars, compared to overcollateralized lending platforms like Aave and Compound. Unsecured lending protocol sizes are much smaller, but they offer higher Annual Percentage Yields (APYs). This also means that unsecured lending involves higher risks, as the security of the protocol's lending pool primarily depends on due diligence (DD) by pool managers, and off-chain asset and contract liquidation are challenges for the industry's development. For users, it may be difficult to withdraw their loans when needed due to insufficient collateral, often leading to liquidity shortages in the lending pools.
From a market capitalization perspective, the unsecured lending industry is still relatively small compared to the entire DeFi sector (0.7%) and the overall cryptocurrency market (0.03%). Considering the significant potential of unsecured lending in traditional finance, the decentralized unsecured lending market has substantial room for growth, but it requires more time for innovation and building trust.
Clearpool is a DeFi protocol that was launched in 2022. It is currently the highest-yielding uncollateralized lending protocol, with a total loan amount of $440 million and an average yield of nearly 12%. In 2021, it secured a $3 million investment from prominent institutions like Sequoia India and HashKey.

Clearpool's unique feature lies in its partnership with the US credit service provider Credora, through which they conduct rigorous risk assessments of lending institutions. Based on the assessment results, some institutions are included in the borrower whitelist, and users can choose to lend to these whitelist institutions to receive returns that have been risk-adjusted.
CPOOL is Clearpool's governance token with multiple functions:
1. Holders can vote to decide whether to add new borrowers to the whitelist.
2. CPOOL holders can earn income from Clearpool's oracle system.
3. Borrowers not only receive regular USDC interest but also enjoy additional rewards paid in CPOOL.
Clearpool initially operated on the Ethereum and Polygon networks, as shown in the graph below, and since April of this year, its lending volume has shown a significant growth trend, reaching a current lending volume of $25 million.

After receiving a donation from the OP Foundation this time, Clearpool is expected to launch on the OP mainnet, with the potential for further business expansion.
The Clearpool team has announced that, in celebration of this significant milestone, they will allocate all 150,000 OP tokens they have received as a grant to incentivize Clearpool's lending pool on the OP network.
The team has initiated a 60-day campaign, and according to the campaign rules, lenders will have the opportunity to earn additional liquidity provision rewards, making it an attractive benefit. In addition to returns from interest paid by borrowers, OP token rewards will also be distributed directly to addresses providing liquidity through weekly airdrops.
During this campaign, Clearpool will regularly take daily snapshots. Based on the proportion of liquidity provided by LPs (Liquidity Providers) in the lending pool at the time of the snapshot, the distribution ratio of OP rewards will be calculated. These OP rewards will be distributed through weekly airdrops, sent directly to the addresses providing liquidity, and these rewards will be in addition to the interest paid by borrowers.
The campaign will commence on October 26, 2023, and will run until December 24, 2023.
Clearpool has also announced a partnership with Idle, and Clearpool's lending pool has been further enriched with Idle Yield Tranches (YTs), which have successfully expanded to the Optimism mainnet, offering advanced risk diversification opportunities. Idle has also received a grant of 150,000 OP tokens from the Optimism Foundation, which will be used exclusively to reward lenders on the Clearpool Optimism Market.
YTs represent a powerful solution for effectively reducing the inherent risks in the DeFi credit securitization market. These innovative tools allow risk and return to be segmented, catering to the needs of various users by offering two risk-return profiles (Senior and Junior). Senior holders benefit from comprehensive protection provided by liquidity provided by the Junior class, while Junior holders benefit from higher returns in exchange for the protection they provide.
Users can earn additional OP token rewards by depositing using Idle YTs on Clearpool's Optimism Market, which are provided jointly by Clearpool and Idle.
Clearly, this partnership will provide Clearpool users with more investment opportunities and further propel Clearpool's growth in the DeFi ecosystem.
