On June 1, CNBC reported that the AI-Driven Enterprise Institute (AIDE) released its latest research report assessing the level of artificial intelligence applications among S&P 500 companies. The report scores companies based on public data from earnings calls, job postings, patent applications, and other sources across four dimensions: AI awareness, advocacy, strategic orientation, and implementation. The results show that Nvidia, Meta, Amazon, and energy services giant Schlumberger (now SLB) achieved a perfect score of 100, tying as the companies with the highest level of AI application. Walmart, AES, NextEra Energy, Alphabet, and Microsoft also ranked highly. By industry, Alphabet ranked first in the communication services sector, Amazon in the consumer discretionary sector, Walmart in the consumer staples sector, SLB in the energy sector, Block in the financial sector, and Microsoft in the information technology sector. AIDE CEO Paul Cheek stated that the index aims to provide objective reference points for corporate boards and management to help assess their AI strategies against peers, rather than measuring the direct contribution of AI to financial returns. The report also noted that there is still significant room for improvement in AI literacy among corporate boards and executives.
