On November 4th, Elon Musk referenced his own tweet from April 2021 stating, "SpaceX will send a real Dogecoin to the real moon," and said, "The time has come."
In 2021, after the tweet was published, the price of DOGE soared nearly 30% in a few minutes, showing Musk's huge influence on this meme coin. A few weeks later, the SpaceX founder confirmed that the company would indeed launch the "DOGE-1 lunar mission," accepting payment in DOGE.
DOGE-1 is a CubeSat mission developed by the Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC), fully paid for with Dogecoin. Its payload will be launched on SpaceX's Falcon9 rocket, becoming the first space mission fully paid for with cryptocurrency. The launch of this mission has been delayed multiple times, but according to filings with the US Federal Communications Commission, it is still scheduled to take place by the end of 2025.
