Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2002, is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular Genetics and Director of the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center.

In 2007, Hobbs was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Heart Association.

In 2005, she became the first recipient of the Clinical Scientist Award from the American Heart Association, and was awarded Germany's Heinrich Wieland Prize.

Hobbs was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2004 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006, and received the International Society of Atherosclerosis Prize in 2012.

She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
